I started in my new career incarnation of international civil servant on March 1st, with a short redeye flight on Aeroflot to Moscow, where the taxi dropped me off at 7:30 am at the monolithic Russian Academy of Sciences. I was there to represent my new employer, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, at a meeting of a scientific body we sponsor, the World Climate Research Programme.
